2024 has been a quieter year than usual for superhero movie releases following a disappointing 2023 for DC and the MCU, critically and financially. The superhero genre is looking more precarious than ever as superhero fatigue appears to be setting in, while the SAG-AFTRA strikes of Summer 2023 took a heavy toll on the release schedules of all studios, with the MCU timeline, in particular, resolving to push many of their 2024 release dates back by several months. Meanwhile, the DCEU's swansong, Aquaman and the Last Kingdom, signaled a hefty break for DC studios, which plans to reboot the cinematic franchise with the DCU starting in 2025.

There are still plenty of superhero films that have been released this year, and a handful still to go. The Sony Spider-Man Universe, in particular, ramped up its schedule with three major titles for the franchise in 2024 alone. Animated movies also appeared throughout. Whether the absence of the typical MCU and DCEU onslaught left the year feeling bereft or acts as a palate cleanser remains to be seen, but there are still a few movies to look forward to.

The anticipated third installment of Sony's successful Venom franchise has a lot of questions to answer as it follows Venom's fleeting foray into the MCU as depicted in Spider-Man: No Way Home's post-credits scene. It will be hard for the Venom: Let There Be Carnage sequel to brush a jaunt through the multiverse under the rug. Meanwhile, Venom's gutsy convenience store owner, Mrs. Chen also recently came into contact with an animated Spot from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, meaning that Venom: The Last Dance has a couple of multiversal plot threads to address.

With Knull set to appear as the big bad of Venom: The Last Dance, there are plenty of ways the story can go, which could end in the tragic separation of Eddie and Venom. The stakes are higher than ever for what is the final installment in the Venom trilogy. Sony has one more release after Venom: The Last Dance, raising the question about what will happen during the film to set up future releases for the studio.

Kraven The Hunter was initially slated to be released in October 2023, but has been pushed back several times, finally setting a release date for December 13, 2024. Beyond the effects of the SAG-AFTRA strikes, the reasons for such severe delays are unclear, though it is likely that the Sony Spider-Man Universe is gunning for another box-office smash reminiscent of Venom. Distancing Kraven the Hunter as much as possible from the lambasted Morbius and Madame Web and seizing as much time as possible to perfect the final product could be the means through which the studio aims to achieve this.

Either way, this will be Kraven's first cinematic outing in history, and with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the titular role, it looks promising. As has proved to be a habit of the Sony Spider-Man Universe, Kraven's origin looks decidedly different from the comics, but that doesn't necessarily spell doom for the movie. Instead, the franchise could be set to introduce its newest fan-favorite antihero in the late 2024 holiday season.

The Multiverse currently seems to be the superhero genre's most pervasive theme, and DC's animated movies are no exception. Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths adapts DC's seminal multiverse story in which a vast multiversal war brings about one single DC Universe, resulting in the deaths of many of DC's most illustrious characters. This came at an interesting time for DC, as the animated depiction of a multiversal "reboot" precedes the live-action reboot of live-action DC movies in the form of the DCU.
Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One is the first in a trilogy of movies and the eleventh installment in DC's beloved Tomorrowverse franchise. The movie was first released digitally on January 9, with a 4K UHD version following on January 23, 2024.

Madame Web

- February 14, 2024
- Director
- S.J. Clarkson
- Cast
- Dakota Johnson , Emma Roberts , Adam Scott , Isabela Merced , Sydney Sweeney
Sony's Spider-Man Universe continued in 2024 with Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson as an atypical rendition of Cassandra Web, alongside a series of Spider-People in the form of Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin/Spider-Woman (Celeste O'Connor), and Anya Coraz¨®n/Ara?a/Spider-Girl (Isabela Merced).
Madame Web was released on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2024, and quickly garnered a subpar reputation, as many Madame Web reviews compared it to the much memed upon Morbius. Hopefully, the franchise will be able to course-correct from these perceptions with future releases like Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven The Hunter.

Following close after Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One was Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part Two, intended to be the second of a three-part movie series which brings the "Crisis On Infinite Earths" storyline to the Tomorrowverse, in an epic conclusion to the animated DC universe. Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part Two was a step-down from the first part, falling prey to being the middle chapter that mostly exists for the final film in the trilogy.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part Three was the grand finale of not only the animated adaptation of one of DC's most influential stories, but also the Tomorrowverse that started with Superman: Man of Tomorrow in 2020. With the DC Universe set to have animated projects within the franchise's main timeline, the Tomorrowverse's ending should allow these new releases to take center stage.

Deadpool & Wolverine was the only MCU film to be released in 2024, but it was incredibly successful, becoming the highest grossing Marvel film since Spider-Man: No Way Home. A single cinematic release for the MCU in 2024 offered a moment of reprieve for an audience that may have felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of releases populating the Multiverse Saga. Deadpool & Wolverine, meanwhile, is no typical MCU movie, capturing all the R-rated glee the character is known for.

With Ryan Reynold's Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine briefly making their way into the MCU, the question now rises about where they might be included again. It seems likely that Marvel Studios would look to capitalize on one of the best performing projects post-Avengers: Endgame.

Watchmen: Chapter 1 is the first installment of a brand-new animated adaptation of Alan Moore's incredibly influential graphic novel. It was released on August 13, 2024, to strong reviews, with many saying how faithful it is to the source material while really capturing the beautiful art by Dave Gibbons. Watchmen: Chapter 1 ends on a cliffhanger, though, as Watchmen: Chapter 2 will conclude the animated adaptation sometime in 2025.

Joker: Folie ¨¤ Deux was the highly anticipated sequel to Joker from 2019, the first R-rated film to make over $1 billion at the box office, featuring the most iconic villain in comic book history. It was also the only live-action DC film released in 2024, as the DCU goes in full swing in 2025 with James Gunn's Superman. Joker: Folie ¨¤ Deux was released on October 4, 2024, to tepid reviews, with it garnering some of the worst fan scores ever for a comic book film.
Joker: Folie ¨¤ Deux revisits the dismal world of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) in the aftermath of his violent genesis as the Joker. It also stars Lady Gaga in the role of Lee Quinn, another inmate of Arkham Asylum who develops a relationship with Arthur Fleck. While in Arkham, Arthur awaits his trial for his crimes in the first film, with Harvey Dent being the prosecuting attorney. With movies featuring supervillains as the focal lead becoming more prevalent in the current superhero film sphere, Joker: Foile ¨¢ Deux offers many lessons for DC and the MCU to learn going forward.
